With large format photography it is not a question of "finding" the decisive moment but "waiting for" the decisive moment. Beautiful work !!

That 4x5 photograph is beautiful.

The most important bit of kit you’re taking is your dog! I take my border collie with me everywhere and he is the best company. He also stops people thinking I’m mad when I’m talking to no one when shooting an episode.

I have been following you for some time, love your work so much, the 4x5 is amazing and I have just got set up to start shooting this format which I’m excited about but wow I love the grain in your 35mm images and how that comes across which is just superb, thank you so much for sharing.

I find my enjoyment anymore is the just going out and shooting. There times I look at a scene and think yes 4x5 and others I’m glad I had a 35mm film or digital camera with me. Last night was lots of looking but only 6 really blah images but I had fun just looking and exploring an area I hadn’t been to in ages

4x5 is by far my favorite format, but there’s a time for it. Usually I have it with me on solo trips because of the time it takes overall. But it’s also a meditative process for me personally. I’m very precise with my images with it and almost always love what I end up with because of that.
Although I love the portability of my Hasselblad when I’m on trips with others 😅

Stunning shots and I would say if that one 4X5 was all you came away with, then it was worth the effort! It’s videos like this that are inspiring me to return to film after 20 years of digital.

The grain from the 35mm HP5 was, well, WOW! Great work, though. I use a light meter app on my Android phone for my medium format work. I calibrated it against a camera I trusted, in this case, my wife's Canon S90. I think I spent some 2 hours looking at various scenes to make sure it would work consistently. I was able to get it nicely dialed in and have confidence that I am always within 1/3 of a stop.

There’s a lot to said for working with medium format. It really depends on the size of the finished print.

I'm 3 minutes in. Having my morning coffee. Gotta admit, on the one hand, that's a bleak landscape, but at the same time, it's full of ghosts and there's a special 'unsettling' beauty in that.
So you're hand developing in Rodinal which would add to the gritty atmosphere of the images. I was curious if you're also hand printing these in a classic darkroom or are you scanning or copying the negatives to further refine them in a digital theater?
You're a cool chap, I could watch these all day. Looking forward to seeing more of these.
ps, may I ask where roughly in the UK is this bit of landscape?

*edit  Just finished watching until the end. Your photographs here are magical, they really are. At this moment, I would damned near be willing to sell a kidney to be able to grab a loupe and eyeball your negatives on a lightbox, I'm that impressed 😂.  Just curious, though, but all the shots involving the sheep and horses are done with 35mm, I'm assuming? Again, really, really well done. 👏 👏 👏 👏

4x5 is great but look how much more productive you are with the 35mm. Time is a photographers most valuable resource!

Lovely shots whatever you are shooting with. Luckily I can walk up to the moors from my front door in ten minutes, which nakes me lazy as I'd have drive for ten minutes to be on the fells and a whole half hour to be in the mountains. I guess distance is relative to how 'Can't be Arsed' you're feeling.
Same goes for how heavy the camera is ...

I'd recommend trying something in between 35mm and 4x5: the Fuji GW690 III (Texas Leica) or the GSW (wide-angle) version. The camera is easy to use handheld and delivers amazing image quality, while still being relatively lightweight and affordable.

Really liked the shots you got using the 4 x 5. It makes me wonder... I've only started doing film again in the last year (color only in the last month) and while I can do 35mm (and 120) I don't have a darkroom these days, so doing sheet film would be out of the question. I don't imagine it's something you can send out. All things considered that means it's likely not worth the agro for me to see how I'd do with a set-up that would take even longer. Love the LF but to me your 35mm images are more expressive. I’ve not used my LF for a couple of years and now find I’m enjoying a compromise between LF, MF, and 35mm, by using 35mm with a very fine grain film such as Adox CMS-20 or HR-50? HR-50 is very easy to use and develop (I use FX-39). I think the point is it’s a quasi MF quality with the shooting flexibility of 35mm, but a tripod is still needed.

I've heard pushing HP5 with 510 pyro doesn't perform well, but your result is very convincing. I've no experience with 510 pyro.
