Warhammer 40K never fails to remind us just how dark and fascinating its universe really is.

In this reaction, we checked out the newest Darktide DLC trailer focusing on the mysterious Adeptus Mechanicus, and it completely changed the way we look at one of the Imperium's most iconic factions.

What surprised Tasha the most wasn't the technology...

It was the philosophy.

Watching members of the Adeptus Mechanicus willingly replace their flesh with machinery—and even celebrate the loss of their humanity—was both fascinating and unsettling. The ritualistic nature of their augmentations and their devotion to the Machine God gave us plenty to pause, question, and discuss throughout the trailer.

One of the things we love most about Warhammer is that every faction has its own beliefs, traditions, and worldview. The Mechanicus aren't just engineers—they're a religious order whose faith is built around knowledge, machinery, and the pursuit of perfection through augmentation.

This trailer gave us another glimpse into why the Warhammer universe is unlike anything else in science fiction.

💬 QUESTION OF THE DAY:

"They have completely lost their humanity"

No they are willing to change and lose everything else. Their humanity is the one thing they still have. Their minds are still human.

The Mechanicus are the one faction that can directly opose or ignore the Eclisiarchy due to the treaty of Mars where the Emperor granted them religious autonomy in return for their allegiance. The entire imperial cult is in direct violation of the emperor's orders while the tech priests are the only religion he didn't destroy and acknowledged in writing.

During Old Night when humanity was cut off from each other, the terraforming of Mars was undone, so for around 10k years, they had to maintain life support systems in Martian tunnels to survive. Over that time, those who could conduct maintenance and keep everyone alive were revered as priests, and the culture shifted to that of a theocracy. Mechanical conponents were added to the people to aid in their survival and thus the Mechanicum was formed.

When the Emperor of Mankind, beloved by all, arrived to Mars, he repaired an ancient machine and was proclaimed as the Omnissiah. In order to use Mars' vast manufacturing capabilities, as well as the tech priests, he allowed them, and only them, to practice their religion.

The "skull" is a Servo-Skull.

Servo-Skulls are mad eout of the SKulls of individuals that have given outstanding services to the Imperium.

It is seen as an Honor, cause it means that this person's work and dedication to the Imperium was so good and valuable that they are to continue their work ,even after their Death.

The skull is the housing for a simple/rudimentary Cogitator unit that houses the Machine Spirit(the computer), with a miniaturized anti-grav engine and they can be used for assistance work, such as recording video feed, scanning, calculator, or remote access to Imperial systemes

They are basicly like a Drone with a Computer in it, they can also be modified to fill in specific needs and roles.

Auspex(scanners) can be mounted on them and they are then used as Probes for surveillance or exploration/reconnaissance.

They can be given small arms/mecadandrites so that they can grab tools and ammo and pass it to their Handler.

Some might also be mounted with rudimentary medical supplies and aids to administer first aid on the battle field.

Servo-skulls can be used in a GREAT number of ways and are very versatile.

This poor woman has no idea how grim dark it actually gets. This is only a 3/10 on the grom dark scale. She seems to sweet to expose to the full force of 40k.

1:46 Hadron, the woman in the red cloak on the left, Is over 400 years old. If we live to our old age we wither and decay. Our limbs ache. We have slow organ failure. Our memory is not as good as it used to be. The augmentations of the machine cult in a way improve life. Even though in a sense, it's getting rid of what makes us human.

My favorite part of the Mechanicus is that there's that thing, that Robocop thing, like that scene from the 2010's Robocop remake where they take him apart on the slab and all that's left of him is lungs and most of his head and like his esophogus and like some hand and stuff, like that "oh god there's nothing left" moment, right? That's supposed to make you feel like a pit has opened up in your stomach? The Adeptus Mechanicus have to stare into that abyss as step ONE of their religious faith. Looking into that abyss, having it look back at you, and you have to be willing to go "dude, sick" and if you can't do that, you're not really going to be a member of the Mechanicus.

an important thing to understand 40k: it is a scenario of a total spiritual war!
when hell and demons are not just a theory but their existense is a fact. where even a single false thought can already get you the attention of a demon starting to influence you, to corrupt you. when you can not trust your own thoughts, feelings, instincts and sometimes not even your senses.
the mechanicus believes that everything created by man, inherits a part of the creators soul. and every user gives a part of his soul and adds it to the soul of the machine. as such machines are seen as living beeings. and the older the machine gets, the more venerated it will be. and through the influence of the warp this has become reality. thats why their rituals and praying realy works.

another important lesson: the warp makes believe real. the more people believe strong enough in something, the more it gets drawn into reality. so if you tell a lie, and the whole galaxy believes it, it becomes real and stops beeing a lie.

The escort for the Tech Priestess are Skitarii, the rank-and-file foot soldiers of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Usually volunteers, they represent an opportunity for a lower caste to ascend to higher rank in service to the Omnisiah.

As Skitarii, they accept augments which include a neural link to the Tech Priests; they are entirely under their control with no will of their own. This doesn't mean they can't act autonomously within certain pre-programmed parameters; just that they follow Tech Priest orders without question.

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call a temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal… Even in death I serve the Omnissiah.

"How do they do bodily functions?" They don't, those are weaknesses of the flesh. They don't sleep, they don't eat, they don't blink. Quite a few also do this willingly. It is seen as an honor to be allowed to fight in service of the Machine God. The Skitarii (The one you saw disrobed) are actually have more flesh than some of the Tech Priests like Hadron. Some of them are barely anything but a human brain (AI is outlawed so, that part can't ever be replaced) in a robotic body. The less flesh they have, the closer they are to their god in their religion. And... they might be on to something because their faith, rituals, and prayers do work to maintain equipment and make it run smoothly.

As a little note Warhammer was made with the idea "What if we took concepts from real life, and took them all to their worst extremes." Religion which was once to build community becomes intolerance and hate. War is amped up to a never ending galactic slaughter. Over population it taken to insane extremes where billions live in one city that reaches the atmosphere and the lower you go the worse and more cramped it all gets. Everything is not just turned up to 11, it's turned up to a 100. The police are Judge, jury, and executioner. Demons are real and regullarly rip themselves into reality through the bodies of psykers.

This reminds me that the normal reaction to seeing a Skitarii without robes is supposed to be disgust and concern. Not "Yay, strong allies!" without any hint of digust xD

8:20 basically the answer is robocop, like how robocop had that baby food slurry for nutrition, they'd have nutrient packs that would basically go into a surrogate stomach for basic chemical needs. They wouldn't "eat" at all.
