In September 1899, a Cornish crew driving a drift 160 feet under Cleopatra Hill at the United Verde copper mine in Jerome, Arizona, broke into an ancient copper pit no one knew existed. Seventy feet deep, dug by hand with stone and fire. At the bottom, a six-ton block of ore sat on stacked juniper logs. Pushed beneath it was a dark metal tool fourteen feet long: a ringed disk at one end, two broad prongs at the other. No file would bite it. No magnet would hold it.

Seven weeks later, on First Mesa, an elder of the Hopi Water Clan who had never seen the tool described it: the rings, the prongs, the weight. The Hopi said it had been left behind, and that it was not theirs. Three hundred years earlier, Hopi guides had led Espejo and Farfán to this same mountain.

This film follows six numbered records: a mine captain's log and a surveyor's field book, the tool itself, the elder's account, a geologist's return in 1918, the same scene at Isle Royale, Rudna Glava and the Great Orme, and a crate that vanished from a New York mansion. The mainstream explanation is set out fully and fairly. The pit itself was blasted away by the open pit.

Which way are its prongs pointing now?

This documentary examines historical records, archaeological research, and Indigenous oral traditions. It presents documented findings alongside long-standing questions that remain open. Where accounts differ, both are presented. Nothing here is offered as a settled conclusion.
