Princess Leonor received her commission as a Cadet Officer from King Felipe VI on Wednesday, marking the completion of her first stage of military training at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza. Her father also presented her with the Grand Cross of Military Merit with white distinction.
The ceremony, which also included the commissioning of Army and Civil Guard lieutenants who have completed their five-year training, began with a 21-gun salute.
The Grand Cross of Military Merit was also awarded to then-Prince Felipe in July 1986, upon completing his time at the Zaragoza Academy. The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, and the President of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, are among the civil and military authorities expected to attend the ceremony.
The lieutenants completing their five-year course at the General Military Academy, from both the Army and the Civil Guard, will also receive their commissions by royal decree. The ceremony, held in the parade ground of the General Military Academy of Zaragoza, concludes with a parade down the main avenue, the order to dismiss, and the throwing of berets into the air.
As happened ten and a half months ago when she entered the Zaragoza military academy, her parents, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, and her sister, Infanta Sofía, accompanied the Princess of Asturias at the ceremony, following in the footsteps of the King, who received his commission as a second lieutenant from King Juan Carlos I 38 years ago.
After receiving the commission and the award, the Princess of Asturias joined the presiding group to watch the ceremony alongside her family, after embracing her mother and sister. Her father then affectionately touched her arm.
