There's a number in the latest census data that should stop every Californian cold: Los Angeles County just posted the largest population loss of any county in America — and the people are disappearing from the ordinary, working-class suburbs most videos ignore. In this video we count down ten California cities losing residents faster than anywhere in America, from the Los Angeles County suburbs of Lakewood, South Gate, Norwalk, Downey, Carson, Paramount and Bellflower, to the Bay Area's San Leandro, Pleasanton, and our number one, Union City — the single fastest-shrinking city in the state at nearly seven percent. For each one we break down how fast it's shrinking, why residents are leaving, where they're going, and what it means for the future of California. The common thread through every one: it simply costs too much to stay, for the working poor and the wealthy alike. Is your city growing or shrinking? Would you ever leave California? Tell us in the comments, and subscribe for more on the state's changing future.
