Plan G, Plan N, or High Deductible Plan G — which Medicare Supplement plan makes the most sense for you?
The answer isn’t simply which plan has the lowest premium.
It comes down to how you want to pay for your healthcare and how much financial risk you’re comfortable keeping yourself.
In this video, I compare three popular Medicare Supplement (Medigap) options:
• Medicare Supplement Plan G
• Medicare Supplement Plan N
• High Deductible Plan G
We’ll look at the differences in monthly premiums, deductibles, out-of-pocket costs, and predictability; and why paying more every month isn’t necessarily better or worse than choosing to retain more of the risk yourself.
We’ll also talk about something these plans have in common that I believe is extremely important: healthcare freedom.
Because Plan G, Plan N, and High Deductible G all work alongside Original Medicare, you generally have the freedom to see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.
That means the real question becomes:
How do you want to finance that freedom?
Someone may prefer Plan G because they're willing to pay a higher monthly premium for more predictable healthcare expenses.
Someone else may prefer Plan N and accept some additional cost sharing in exchange for a lower premium.
And another person may be comfortable with High Deductible G because they have sufficient savings and would rather retain more of the initial financial risk in exchange for substantially lower fixed monthly expenses.
None of those decisions is automatically right or wrong.
The goal is to understand the tradeoffs and choose the Medicare coverage that fits your finances, healthcare needs, and priorities.
That’s why I use my Freedom First framework:
✓ Protect your healthcare freedom
✓ Protect your retirement income
✓ Retain control over your healthcare decisions
