It's just so useful to hear how she analyzes her packing.  I don't always copy her methods but I always benefit from her insights.

I have been carrying both a packable  daypack and  packable  tote for the last 8 months of travel. This allows me to do day hikes and pick up groceries on my way back!

I do the same but thought I was ‘over doing’ it with using these 3 types of bags but they all serve their purpose and weigh nothing and now I won’t give myself a hard time about doing so! Thanks Maggi 😊

This is exactly how I travel; 30L backpack, small sling for carrying my valuables and some electronics on the plane, and a packable backpack.

At 64 my days of backpack traveling are over. But I’ve learned so much from your videos that has let me travel easily with a roller carry on and small personal item. Thank you!

I love your cadence and way of talking, you should do podcasts or audio focused videos and produce more! Your content is great and so thoughtful so I feel that I have to pay full attention but would be awesome to have something like pros and cons about random item, thoughts on taking the daily bus in x place, etc. Would also be awesome to hear more about your thoughts on life and how to feel better, work, relationships, etc.

Great technique & security! I don’t have all the tech so I do it differently - but am also a 3 bag traveller!! ✨💪🏻 So I use my small crossbody for the need to be secure items & then my third bag is a cotton bag, thin, and I fold my coat/gloves/mittens/hat into it, tie the handles together, and use it as an extra pillow. This has worked well for me for ages… and when boarding, I wear my outerwear, but I leave the plane usually with my 3 bags 😂. I find it handy too for walking around the airport vs carrying a loose winter coat flopping around or getting too hot wearing it. So slightly different method, but same 3 bags! 💪🏻👍🏻😂

Thanks for sharing your method! I think most "one bag" travelers are more like "three bag" travelers. It doesn't make sense to keep everything in one main bag all the time. I like to travel with at least 4 bags: main bag of clothes, smaller day bag, crossbody purse for absolute essentials like passport and money, plus a lightweight foldable bag. 🌸Heidi

Hearing her talk, I discovered that I do exactly the same. 😅
I usually travel with a carry on or a backpack depending of the travel and a light packable tote bag with a zip as a personal item that is sighly oversized to have room for gifts when I return home, to go groceries shopping or to use like a handbag.
I have a small sling where I put my phone, passport, wallet, keys, my inhalator, a pack of tissues, a chopstick, a pair of one dosis eyedrops, earplugs, a paper with my family and embassy phone numbers (my phone died in a really tragic way in one travel), passport photos (saw one friend really stressed when they snatched her purse with her phone, money and passport and we had to go to the embassy and find a place where she would be able to take a passport legal size photos to do her a new travel document to be able to return home) and chewing gum if I travel by plane to minimize my tinnitus induced by changing pressures.
That sling goes inside the personal item bag at the plane security checking with  my medical pouch, my electronic pouch and my toleitteries bag. The toleitteries bag is transferred to the backpack or carry on after I pass the security check if necessary. I never travel with a big camera or laptop, my electronic pouch is a Kindle, airpods, a plug converter and a phone cable. 😂
When I do "inside" travel I pack my personal item at the backpack and I wear my sling always on me, usually without the chopstick, the chewing gum and eyedrops and I put my phone cable instead.

Maggi your system is great. I have never even come close to traveling with just a carry-on. The airlines have never lost my bag, a bicycle once that took days to recover in Hamburg.

I've had a PD packable tote for several years now and it's been great for my travel.  I frequently use it as a purse as most of our travel is for wildlife photography so we are not in urban centers and it works great as a purse/carryall and has been super durable with little signs of wear.  I'm very pleased with mine.  It's great because you can stuff a light windbreaker in it, etc.

The timing of this video has been spot on! This exact 3 bag system has been on mind since my main backpack has arrived. Now that you have shared your experience with this system, it has helped me make the final decision on what 2nd and 3rd bags to get.

Not a one bag traveler here, but definitely like your flexibility here.  I can apply it to my personal items but we almost always check a bag.  But I’m learning to pare it down.  Thanks!

I do that as well. I also dress in layers and find it more comfortable to put a winter coat, cardigan or shawl into a light grocery bag to carry around the airport or put it in  the overhead bin (where it might get dirty/torn/lost otherwise)

I usually put the valuables bag under my coat or jacket when in travel for extra security

im also same as you except i use a fanny pack because i prefer wearing the sling on my hip when wearing a backpack, its more comfortable for me. But if I’m wearing the fanny pack alone then I just adjust the strap and wear on my back… so right now my setup is: ULA Dragonfly 30L + Aer Go Pack 2 + Bellroy Venture Ready 2.5L, it works well for me 😊 also if you forget to bring a packable backpack, its ok to ask for a plastic bag in the airport shop, it might even help because airline might think its souvenir bag and ignore it 😂

I have virtually the same setup, only a different main backpack design. One tip, with the Alpaka sling (with the 5.5L Go model anyway), putting 2 large-ish (sorry don't remember the exact size) S-biners in the loops near where the strap attaches allows the sling to be hung from the pouch on the back of an airline seat. Now, all of your important items are dangling right in front of your knees in easy reach while you are in flight. You can also use the S-biners to hold a cap or other item from the sling when walking around.

Great advice even for those who check a bag! I’ve recently started bringing a foldable travel bag for extra flexibility and will now start ensuring that everything I need during the flight is packed in my personal item.

Yeah, this is basically how i've been travelling for years now. I just haven't bought any of it specifically for travelling. My big backpack (for long haul, when i'm allowed 10kg) is a bag i got free because it was getting thrown out at work anyway. It's a really heavy duty military bag with loads of internal pockets but a nice big open main section too. My little bag is an ancient 'night out' bag from the 90s. It's pitch black with thin strings that mean i usually get away with wearing it right on to the plane because noone really notices it anyway. It's JUST big enough for my phone, passport and glasses, keys, purse or tissues etc. I also usually wear a long pair of trousers with ridiculously deep pockets, so sometimes i don't even need the little bag. And i usually have a smaller bag (a shopper) stuffed into the top of my 'big bag' that has all the stuff i need accessible for the plane/bus/train or whatever.
It's a pretty infallable system and doesn't require any speciality purchases.
