Brilliant incredible writer. Character driven books, with loads of suspense and action. I am usually not at all into espionage thrillers and stuff like that... And yet I devoured his books like a woman starved. As a kid, the character in one of his books was my first crush ever -  it was Chris from Brotherhood of the Rose. In my opinion, Saul and Chris were, by far, his greatest characters - both of them so very tragic. Saul appears in other works of David's and... He broke my dadgum heart each single time. Despite the suspenseful nature of the books and novellas, his struggles were always very relatable and, well, human. And herein lies the greatness of Morell's books: No matter how grandiose the action and intricate the plot... All of his characters are delightfully human - and vulnerable. They are real people, not just stereotypes. And as an amateur wannabe writer myself... I really can appreciate that.

What a treat!!  I saw the film in 1982 and bought the book a.s.a.p. thereafter.  First Blood remains my favorite film today - really impactful.  I watch it at least once a year.

Loved this.  Writers are my favorite people.  I read a lot and really enjoy these conversations.  I have read First Blood twice, Ill read it again.  His writing is amazing, gritty, and crafty.

Great interview! I've read several of David Morrell's novels and loved them all: Brotherhood of the Rose, Fraternity of the Stone, League of Night and Fog, The Fifth Profession. Has he written others? If not, I wish he would.

You should read The Forgotten soldier by Guy Sajer. Its not a novel, rather a first hand account of a frech/german young guy that was drafted into the whermacht. Beautifully written. An absolute classic.
