I loved this movie so much. I truly felt very seen as a proud Filipino-Canadian. I was also very entertained and there were plenty of moments that tugged at my heart. 10/10
The Reason there's always "uy Pilipins" as a reaction from us, is that our culture is a culture of servants, culture of "Pwede na" and culture of "buhay pa". Our place in the table is not on it but beside someone who is on it. A lot of Filipinos consider themselves less important than others, so when we are mentioned anywhere outside of our culture and in the world stage, there is a reaction that is from a place of "hey someone noticed us".
SPOILERS FOR EVERYBODY WHO HASN'T WATCHED THE MOVIE:
For me, I think Jo being "over the top" and being hyper and energetic is her way of masking.
The way Raissa never even know how lonely she feels until she discover that memory of Jo and Lola on the telephone and her telling Jo that her dad can't take her abroad. Because Jo mentioned how her dad was planning to take her someday but it never happened. And how at that moment Jo cried to Lola saying she's her only family now and Lola cheering her up going "even friends can be family" then you see Jo coming to Raissa anxiously asking if they're gonna be friends forever, implying that she hopes Raissa's never gonna leave her like everybody else. And then that scene of Jo and Raissa showing Lola a story in the hospital and a close up shot of Jo tearing up knowing her Lola is dying. And after Lola's burial, Jo is crouching bringing up her knees and hiding her face as if she's going through it alone. And how she chooses to say what she feels abt Raissa telling her she's going away to Lola's picture instead of telling it to Raissa's face and her going "I guess everybody leaves me" and how she chooses to be stubborn about her keeping their tradition about the charms because she doesn't want things to change because change always ends up with her being left behind. It makes the most sense to her to keep pushing things to be normal and fine because accepting that makes her numb. And she doesn't want to be numb.
representation matters. it won't save the world, or bring an apocalypse. but the first time you see it, like myself, you probably weren't even aware it was something you wanted. it's just, nice. like that thing that you are, that you never talk about, yeah, you're not alone. welcome to the "no way, you too, sweet!?" club my Filipino friends
Knowing from just the title and description alone that this is THE Filipino experience from the big screen... I'm really excited and hope to see it myself when it releases in the states. Me and my friends have been busy and broke, but my family wants to go see it since obviously there's not many chances we get to see rep of US on the big screen. I've missed out on so many theatre experiences these past few months, but I really hope I get to see this movie soon ;w;
I've already seen the movie, and I think they are saving manang's story for the part 2, I really needed a sequel for this movie, it is so good! and you are right about the plot twist, it caught me off guard the moment I realized it.
I like how EVERYTHING is Filipino, the story, the mythologies, the references, songs, and even the main actors and directors are filipino. Too bad that Avengers: Endgame: Encore was also showing 😂😂😂
Trivia note: The U.S. game show The Amazing Race has been kn for 38 Seasons, & yet they have traveled to The Philippines for only 3 of them; Seasons 5, 25, & 32.
I still hear tayo na being used today. But itnis not as common as tara na. Because of the debate around this, I’ve been really thinking, and I did notice that I still also use tayo na today. Friends & family & other people around me alao use tayo na. We just do not notice it as much. Tara na is used to invite people. Tara na sa SM. You are asking people to come with you and go somewhere. Tayo na, I usually hear this if you’re literally telling people to move, to go. Which in English also literally means let’s go. Let’s go. = Let us go. = Alis na tayo. = Tayo na. I hear people say, “Tayo na. Magsitayo na kayo. Tama na ang usap dyan. Umalis na tayo. Tara na sa SM.”
I would wanna push back on the sentiments about Manang. I think there's a lot more to her story. I mean she's introduced as a villain but I don't think that's how the story wants her to conclude as. I think there's a lot of meat to be cooked (lol), or story to unpack regarding Manang and specially Lola's time in the island. I think there were other memories that Batiba showed in the movie where I went: "oh is that Lola Fatima's memories?" Like there was one memory of a person's wedding. What did that person go through for them to trade of a precious, once-in-a-lifetime (in the 90s Philippines no less) memory such as their wedding??
If we get a sequel, Im hoping the story gets to that and get to explore lots of our Filipino mythological creatures.
Using "Tara na" makes it target Filipinos only, while using "Tayo na" makes it target the general viewers since it is the correct term. Imagine a non-Filipino viewer who got curious about the movie and research the word Tayo na vs Tara na. Tara na makes it more complicated while Tayo na makes it more easier to understand. Tara na just evolved from Tayo na which was initially the term used. Although the movie is Filipino inspired, the target audience is still the general viewers. Note that the movie is not made for Filipinos but is made as a gateway for non-Filipinos to learn more about Filipino culture.
Hello from Australia. Amazing video! Don't get me wrong I love your villain videos, villains need more time to shine but I wish you could feel free to step out of the box you seem to have been put in and talk about anything and everything that comes to your mind since your enthusiasm and astuteness is really something special. As for the movie I can't wait to watch it, I have to admit that I only know a little about the mythology of the Philippines but what I do know - partly from stumbling over the rap of Mikey Bustos as well as a few ventures into world mythology - makes me seriously intrigued.
Why Forgotten Island is much-needed Filipino Representation
