Bolesław Bierut. Stalin's most loyal man in Poland. He went to Moscow in a fur coat and returned in a coffin.

Officially, he died of heart disease a few days after the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, where Khrushchev delivered a secret speech exposing the crimes of Stalinism. Unofficially, questions circulate to this day, questions the party never dared to ask aloud. What did he really hear in the Kremlin? Why was the coffin closed more quickly than usual? And why did those who saw his body remain silent throughout their lives?

In this episode, I take you from a poor village near Lublin, through the underground, prisons, and mysterious years in the Comintern, to the seat of supreme power in postwar Poland—and back again, to a Moscow clinic in March 1956, where the story of one of the most controversial figures in the history of the Polish People's Republic ends.

This episode includes:
– Bolesław Bierut's childhood and youth in pre-war Lublin
– the murky years of his activity in the Communist International
– his rise to power and Stalin's terror in Poland
– Khrushchev's secret report and what happened in Moscow just before Bierut's death
– his funeral, rumors about poisoning, and the fate of his grave at a Warsaw cemetery
