About this video:
In 1974 a backcountry ranger walked up a nameless drainage in the North Carolina Smokies and never walked out. The search found almost nothing β except his camera, sitting dry on a rock after two floods. They closed the case with the word "drowned." Forty-five years later a wildfire mapping drone flew over that same drainage and picked up a camp that shouldn't have still been there: a swept clearing, a stack of split firewood, a fire ring with no leaves in it. Then the area was closed, and it has stayed closed ever since.

Ten things the mountains took. Sixty-two years of records nobody wanted to finish.
Across five states and the years between 1893 and 1955, ten cases were written up the way you write a thing you mean to forget β a drifter gone out of his boots, a row of names in a county ledger, a page that stops in the middle of a sentence. The law called them misadventure. The people who lived up those hollows called them something else, and only after dark.
