I don't know what's worse, the war, the terrible parting of lovers or losing someone with such a talent for making the world come alive with music, colour and most of all, an unending supply of humour in the face of it all. Spike (Terry), to me is one of life's pick-me-ups, whenever I'm feeling down I listen to or watch him. I never fail to smile. God must have been pleased the day Spike was born, and heaven is a funnier place with him in it. I hope he and his revolving swannicles are 'well pleased'. ❤
In a recent(ish) biography, he was found to have regularly visited Toni for the duration of his life, staying with her on every occasion. His wives had no idea...
Living just up the road from Woy Woy, & remembering my father's rare laughter, guaranteed by the Goons..badjelly the witch as children in the 70s. I revere the dear man and his licence to take the piss out of the royalty. ❤ & I burst into laughter during this..
Sad to hear his voice getting weaker as he got older. I grew up listening to the ;wireless' on a crystal set in bed at night, The goons, Life with Dexter etc.
Superb, laughed and cried in almost equal measure. Seems even with two World wars in the 20th century the 21st century has lost a lot of humanity and pleasure.
I really enjoyed reading these back in the day. Listening to him tell the stories brings it to life. I wish he'd done one more taking up the success of the Goon shows. It would have been fascinating to know more from behind the scenes . I have a couple of Goon show records, signed by Ray Ellington who was a regular visitor to my house when I was young. He was a friend of my father who was a musician.
Can anyone recall a story about a heavy lifting crane crashing to the beach from a cliff whilst lifting anti tank defences on the beach. I think it was Harry Secombe that sheepishly approached Spike on the beach and asked if he'd seen his crane. Spike asked "What colour was it?" I heard that story some years ago and it may have grown or deteriated over time but if it rings any bells with any fans I'd love to look it up. Maybe it was from his memoirs but I thought it was on the radio I'd heard it. Any fans recall??
This series of books has recently been acclaimed as the most realistic record of the British WW2 soldier…. I always wanted to find out what happened to the battery after Spike got wounded. The only thing he mentions is that they ended up in Holland… what happened to Devine, White, Kidgell etc???
