One thing I learned growing up as a bowler is having a good mental game will make you a winner. I'm a 220 average league and tournament bowler with 3 perfect games, and an 800 series, and I'm aware that every pin counts, that's why missing even one spare can cost you a match or tournament victory even miss loses you at least 11 pins. That 10 pin on the right edge get's in just about everyone's head especially after throwing a good shot you get so upset you then miss the spare. One thing I try not to do is get overly emotional when I leave it because I know the moment I get upset I usually will miss it, but when I take a deep breath, I likely make it. It helps relieve the stress in your body and calms you mentally. I learned even more from Walter Ray I noticed how he was poised and didn't panic when Robert Smith seemed like he was running away with it by stringing strikes the 1st 4 frames. He was disappointed but didn't let it get in his head that mental toughness won him the match. Spares are a protector against your opponent so that if they open your chance of winning increase because their mistake just gave you at least 11 pins or even more if you catch a string. Key thing is the match isn't over until it's over your opponent can fall apart or slip up at any moment you need to always be ready to capitalize on it.
Hated gold pins...sucked that Robert Smith had to go through so many injuriesππ...had so much promise and he put so many revs on the ball back then! ππ
I didn't necessarily mind the crowds from this time period of the PBA because in most cases there's lots of noise going on when you bowl but I never cared for those gold pins myself.
