I'm playing Rogue Trader! First edition 40K is rather quite different to the modern game - and it's quite refreshing! I've played 3rd, 4th, 8th, 9th, 10th editions and I struggle with the increasingly tournament-style play and I find stratagems and special rules to be a headache.
There's none of that in 1st edition: what you do get is a more granular system designed with GM arbitration in mind. In some ways its fiddlier, but so much more sandboxy.
