Honestly, we thought we knew the Isle of Wight, but having locals show us around revealed a completely different island. The homemade ice cream alone is worth the ferry trip, and that castle sunset with zero crowds was pure magic.

I am a born and bred Islander, was born just down the road from Carisbrooke Castle and that was our play ground as kids growing up in the 1960s, love the Island then and still do at 71 years

Been living on the Island for 35 years and as much as we love our life here it does not blind us to the problems. The constant bulldozing of the Island for more houses to bring more people to an area which is struggling to contend with the population growth. There are times we are close to gridlock even before we have to navigate the diversions due to road closures for landslips, potholes, new developments going up everywhere etc etc etc. Too many people coming - local services are creaking at the seams to cope. Jobs are generally in the low pay category and outside of the summer season difficult to come by. It is not all sweetness and smiles and those wishing to come here would be wise to educate themselves before coming here as to the potential negatives. They do prove to be insurmountable to some who learn them too late - the decision and commitment already made means their options for further consideration have decreased.

I've lived on the Island since 1988. I still can't believe how lucky I am. My sons and their families think the same. One of the few rare places where even shoplifting is prosecuted. We wouldn't have it any other way. A paradise not to be missed. Don't get me started on the incredible pubs and their food.

You mention about your missus is from the island my mum was born on the island,where abouts is she from on the island please my mum was born above a Barbars shop in Moa place Fresh water

people say isle of wight is good but roads are horrible theirs potholes everywhere theirs allways a traffic jam somewhere and you get a annoying diversion almost every day to deal with and then because of tourists and road closures you get the craziest traffic ever and its polluted everywhere
