The Holden 253 V8 was one of the engines that helped define Australia’s own automotive identity.

Introduced in 1969 with the HT Holden, the 253 was part of Holden’s first Australian-developed V8 family. Displacing 253 cubic inches — about 4.2 liters — it offered something different from the massive American V8s of the era: compact dimensions, useful torque and enough versatility to power everything from Kingswoods and Monaros to Toranas and early Commodores.

In this episode, we explore:

• How Holden developed its first Australian V8
• Why the 253 arrived alongside the larger 308
• Its role in the HT Holden range
• The Kingswood, Monaro, Torana and Commodore connection
• Factory power and torque
• The remarkable Holden Hurricane prototype
• Why the larger 308 ultimately received more performance attention
• Why enthusiasts still remember the 253 today

Early HT applications were rated at approximately 185 hp SAE gross and 262 lb-ft of torque.

And there is a genuinely fascinating performance chapter in the 253 story: Holden’s 1969 Hurricane concept used a prototype version of the 253 reportedly producing around 300 horsepower — evidence that the Australian-designed V8 family had considerable development potential from the beginning.

EDITORIAL NOTE:
The original narration describes the Holden 253 as a “banned” or deliberately suppressed engine and claims that GM executives attempted to erase it from history, citing confidential documents, destroyed test data, unnamed retired engineers and a coordinated effort between Detroit and Australian authorities.

We could not independently verify those claims in reliable historical sources.

Holden’s own historical material instead celebrates the HT as the model that introduced the company’s first Australian-developed V8 in 1969. The 253 was not erased or banned: it remained in production for many years and appeared across several major Holden model lines.

The original narration also presents several specific stories — including a secret 300-plus-horsepower production development program, a Holden engineer identified only as “Richard M.,” government-classified performance data and a “Little Assassin” 253 racing program — that we could not independently document.

What is documented is already significant: Australia designed and produced its own V8 family, the 253 became an important part of Holden history, and a prototype 253 powered one of Australia’s most ambitious concept cars.
