Customers being ripped off by big car dealers? Well, there's a shock!

@lewisknowles 8 days ago

I just ordered a brand new car, and they didn’t even ask if I wanted a ceramic coating, they just added it on! As soon as I looked through the paperwork I told them to take it off as I know fine will it will be rubbish. I’ve seen main dealers cleaning cars with sweeping brushes! I’ve told them not even wash the car give me it as it arrives and I’ll do something myself

I bought an ex demo car only 3 weeks ago and was offered the "ceramic coating" for £450, I declined. I am in my late 60s and have always cleaned and polished my car since the age of 16 moving on from wax to newer products as they came along. I coated my car a few days after I bought it. This video is excellent as always David.

I work in a factory paint shop for a car manufacturer, and I certainly wouldn't put a ceramic coating straight on top of new paint. Every car is worked on to remove defects, and has had workers climbing all over it and using numerous products for polishing etc. I would always get that brand new paint corrected by a detailer before any coating is applied, and refuse anything offered by the dealership.

For someone who hasn't washed the family cars for 3 years, i was shocked for 3 seconds whilst chewing into my Burger King meal

As someone who has worked in the coatings industry I can tell you that the vast majority of these coatings are supplied from one of three big manufacturers based in Guangdong, China. Veslee, Sybon New Materials or Surainbow. They are private-label suppliers which means if you order more than about 100 bottles they will label and box them with your branding. The material cost is negligible since they are all based on silicon dioxide (common sand!) polysiloxanes and resin polymer PDMS. It's actually these that give the hydrophobic effect rather than the silicon dioxide. Options include titanium dioxide and graphine, which gives greater hardness. Ex-factory prices are typically $1.50-2.00 per 500ml bottle. Personally I wouldn't bother.

Buy car, take to a proper "detailer" to look after or look after it yourself using "proper" products.

Years before ceramic coatings came out, I had a "special" coating applied to my new car (Diamondbrite?). It was dazzlingly shiny and so easy to wash. I took the car in for it's first service and asked them to clean a few delivery marks off in the interior. When I picked the car up they said that they gave it a full valet. The new car smell was gone, smelling like cheap perfume and the car looked dull. I'll NEVER EVER allow a main dealer near my cars again!

Project farm agrees , his video on ceramic coatings is very insightful.

I've got a video idea and you'll need to hear me out! "Deep cleaning and polishing viewers cars" And maybe even "Part one, Cleaning N8aHSD's car!"

The marketing paints it like magic. In reality, it's just a durable sacrificial layer. Nice, but not miraculous. If you're not chasing show-car gloss or super easy washes, you can absolutely pass and not lose sleep. A solid polish and sealant once or twice a year is sensible and honest.

Been in the motor trade well over 20 years one dealer group I worked at was selling this at £799 and the kits from a big well known company cost us less then £30and all that happened was the bag thrown in the car the products never got put on the car the valerters simply didn’t have the time or knowledge to do it, only time it got done was if the customer came back and complained most didn’t!

Gerald Ratner's Gold Coatings on his jewelry were about 1 micron

I always have refused the coatings from the dealers. I could tell a better dealer was one who then asked me was I going to get a proper coating on at a detailer. 😂

Most of the dealers here use Permagaurd, Guard X. It performs more like a wax and lasts around 6 months outdoors if maintained. Dealers charge around $1-2k (Aussie dollar) for this addon. Wash Dry Apply out the door in 3 hours.. And you are paying interest for a product that no longer exists for the term of the loan too which is wild!
