Which car driving habit was the hardest for you to unlearn when you started riding? And if you’re a newer rider, which one do you still catch yourself doing? Your answer might help another rider avoid learning it the hard way.

Jamming on the breaks - rear and/or front - especially when your brain says you need to stop NOW, has been the hardest habit to break.  Squeeze the orange, practice makes permanent.

I, a three-wheeler Ryker, hand-throttle-turned left (at a standstill), lurched forward into the left escape point I chose, and the learning continues.

Following distance by far is my biggest fault when riding. Easily one of the easiest ways to improve safety.

I actually learned to ride a motorcycle before learning to drive a car. However, the last time I rode a motorcycle was back in 1998 or 1999, when I started raising kids for a hobby.Watching your videos makes me realize how much I've forgotten in the last 27 or so years. I'm planning on getting back in the saddle soon, so please keep the good tips and pointers coming.

My nemesis has always been following distance. Car, pickup or bike. I work on it constantly. It has improved over the years but still needs work.

Always use your entire lane. Don’t share it with anyone. Always sweep the low horizon. Ride like everyone is out to get you. Riding since 1969 and never been in a motorcycle accident. But I’ve been close.

I was fortunate to be introduced to motorcycles a decade before being able to drive. I got my first mini at 6 years old, and I was racing at 10.
I'm thankful for my early start.  The transition to automobiles was absolutely painless.

15:50 - Honestly, one of the great things about being on a bike is that it is dirt easy to just pull over, do stuff for a minute or three, then resume riding.  In a car, that's a more difficult and hazardous thing, and harder to find a safe place to do so.  Getting away from traffic for a moment and stopping to focus on something that needs to be attended to is easier on two wheels.

Here in the UK, what you call a head check, we call it what it really is... a lifesaver.

I actually drove motorcycle for quite awhile before driving a car. After a life gets in the way of motorcycling pause I found myself forgetting to watch my rearview while stopped. And yes, I got tagged while stopped trying to turn left. Now I watch rearward almost as much as forward. Great scenery in your area BTW; I travel that area fairly often and am convinced you have the nicest roads in the US. Cheers from Canada.

When I first started riding counter steering wasn't in my vocabulary, took me awhile to learn.

Friction zone, throttle and rear brake is a critical skill to learn and practice. Used it often going up and done Pikes Peak.

Unlearning car controls/habits on a motorcycle. The longest was getting the hand/foot coordination down. And with that braking habit you mention, is using engine breaking/rapid downshifting to come to an emergancy stop from a high rate of speed. I only got one front brake and no abs, and using that method has gotten me outta tough situations. Now, it's keeping myself from being complacent while on 2-wheels inorder to not be hit by the jerks of the road, had plenty of near-misses.

Great vid. You can tell your kids from me, to really listen and pay attention to what you say. Spot on. Love your vid. Maybe you do one on the subject why "cars don't see us". That is another can of worms we have to consider on every yard we ride on public roads.

When I first got my driver's license (circa 1989) my examiner mentioned that he found motorcyclists to almost always be the better driver - because we look at the road as an ever-changing surface and not just a black ribbon.  We look for corners being off-camber, or tightening radius, or debris like gravel in the road, or for potholes (or bumpy patches were those potholes were)...essentially we constantly monitor the road surface and evaluate our grip levels and whether there's something that might upset the suspensions and/or our balance.  In cars, we're too insulated from this - and it's only becoming worse these days now that car manufacturers promote their products, not in terms of performance, safety, or handling...but connectivity.

There's a reason we call the "head check" a "life saver".

I rode push bikes a lot growing up (here in the uk our rear brake is on the left of a push bike) and learned to mostly rely on the back brake to avoid going over the bars… had to unlearn that!
