China Lake grenade launcher, Vietnam War weapons, Navy SEAL history, and 40mm firepower come together in the story of one of America’s rarest combat launchers.

During the Vietnam War, Navy SEAL teams operating deep inside enemy territory faced a serious limitation. The standard M79 grenade launcher delivered devastating firepower, but only one round at a time. For a small special operations unit caught in a sudden ambush, the seconds required to reload could decide whether the team escaped or was overwhelmed.

Engineers at the Naval Weapons Center China Lake developed a radically practical solution: a lightweight, pump-action 40mm grenade launcher capable of holding four ready rounds. Built around the familiar action of an American shotgun, it allowed one operator to send multiple high-explosive grenades downrange before an M79 gunner could complete a single reload.

Only roughly two dozen China Lake launchers were assembled. The weapon received no official military designation, never entered mass production, and was issued primarily to Navy SEAL units operating in Vietnam. Despite its obscurity, it gave small teams an extraordinary concentration of explosive firepower during the critical opening seconds of combat.

This documentary examines the failures of the T148E1 and XM148, the development of the China Lake pump-action launcher, its use in the Mekong Delta, its limitations with specialized ammunition, and why the standardized M203 ultimately ended its brief operational life.

The China Lake was never intended to transform the entire American military. It was built to solve one urgent problem for a small group of men fighting far from conventional support—and for a few critical years, it did exactly that.
