I love how this escalated from “the Japanese rice market might be rigged by shadowy forces connected to the government” to “I have to find a way to lie to my wife” lmao

I appreciate learning about what is happening in Japan.  If possible keep extra rice on hand especially when it costs less. Wishing you health and happiness.

Thank you for the report! Food prices are going crazy all over the world

I'm a foreigner growing rice in Japan. I revitalised abandoned fields. I sell rice at ¥230 per kg to a wholesaler. I'm not sure how the price jumps to what you pay. You should look at that

I enjoy your Japanese lifestyle videos much more than watching your video game videos.  As an American, I find videos about the Japanese culture and standard of living very interesting and enlightening.  I like watching videos that teach me new things about the international community and which broaden my understanding of other cultures and their unique challenges and successes

buy many big bags of rice . it never goes bad if stored good..... prices will go much much higher

The government is secretly buying up the entire rice market as it prepares for upcoming major events.

I love your channel!

It was me. I bought some bags of rice this month.

The grocery store is probably selling rice at a loss just to get you in the door, in the hopes that you buy other things while you're there.

I found this..“This drop is a result of the government’s clear intervention and strategic release of rice reserves,” said Farm Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. Blended rice, which includes rice from government stockpiles, now accounts for half of the market share, up 6 percentage points, helping stabilise supply.

One word “Diesel” everything goes up when the Diesel goes high in price and most truck or Diesel trucks that brings production to the stores. I feel it’s going to get worse with the wars that are happening in the world. I friends that been buying up rice too getting for hard times.

Don't give your wife a excuse about getting the old rice, just be straight with her. You get the new rice sometimes like she likes, and the old rice sometimes because you want to get the cheaper one and in this economy thats logical. Her way sometimes, your way sometimes, Thats compromise and good in a relationship.

This is fundamentally due to the affairs occurring in the world right now heavily affecting many economies worldwide

The real issue here is that JA is trying to manufacture a whole new price category. It’s not just about traditional brand-name rice anymore, they are using the 'new-crop' label as an excuse to reset baseline prices and charge consumers significantly more.

I just bought 20 lbs of gold star thai rice from wal mart for $25.86, similar pricing

I went to a well known supermarket chain here in Tokyo, also to buy some rice.  The prices are still higher than 2024 and before.  And the prices are indeed confusing, and all over the place.  In much of 2025 I ate a lot of pasta instead.  I still didn't buy a large bag, I just bought a few pre-cooked packs hoping the situation clarifies itself.

Save bag from new harvested rice and tranfer old rice to that bag. Then see if she can tell the difference.

I'm in KANSAS, USA & our food is unacceptably high here too. I also buy rice & noticed big jump in  Jasmine rice, my favorite.
Best of luck & keep up these videos- we're all in this together! ❤

$12 USD/1900 Yen for 20 lbs/9KG here. So less than half the price in the US ouch
