I've always liked the Miranda class. It strikes me that in its heyday it would have been an absolutely formidable opponent

Honestly, with there being so many Miranda-class ships in the Fleet, they are basically comparable to WW2's Fletcher-class destroyers.

I feel like Mirandas are massively underrated.

The Saratoga from Star Trek IV is a different ship from the Saratoga from Deep Space 9.

The Saratoga from The Voyage Home was NCC-1887, while the ship destroyed at Wolf 359 in Deep Space Nine was NCC-31911.

Worth remembering with the TMP era and the Reliant is that the Federation was dealing with increased hostility from the Klingons, being on the verge of an active resumption of war before Praxis and the Khitomer Accords.

Back in the '80s, I founded a Star Trek fan club named the USS Gallant NCC-1869 (such clubs are often given the name of a starship), which we designed as a Avenger (Miranda) class variant. She had two torpedo bays mounted on the roll bar and a third nacelle mounted on top; towards the rear of the saucer section. In those days, The Avenger class was designated as a heavy frigate, so we classed the Gallant as a battle frigate. This video brought back some fond memories of those days!

One variant you didn't mention was also for the Dominion War, and it featured warp engines that glowed TNG-style and extra impulse engines where the aft torpedo launchers on the roll bar were.

Arguably the most impactful and significant ship class the Federation ever produced.

Another Channel pointed out, that the bulky rectangular part at the aft of the saucer is HUGE, even so that the Miranda has a larger internal volume than primary and secondary hull of the Constitution combined. That would make them very useful as transports. In addition, a lot of space gives you a lot of options to upgrade, which may explain the long service time.

The Miranda class - the little starship that could (do it all.)

In FASA they were known as the Reliant Class. They had a similar history to the Enterprise Class, in that the Reliant was the first Anton Class to have a total refit into what was essentially a brand new class of starship.

The Miranda class is probably by far the most modular and future upgrade thinking ship that Starfleet ever made, whether for combat, exploration, hauling stuff, or specialized scientific needs, it just fills the gaps and roles all so well!

6:11 - The tips look like the resource scanner module in Kerbal Space Program module. They are basically dishes that are expecting a signal at specific vector (which is why they’re not a full circular dish).

The Lantree was supposed to have the rollbar, but the special effects team couldn't get the lighting electronics to work in it, so they left it off for the TNG shoot.

Also, the Miranda model does show one twin-phaser emitter between the impulse engines, same as the twin phasers on the saucer

I just realized something... The TOS Miranda looks much better when you put the ship upside down, the way the deflector is hold beneath the ship with the two supports. It really looks nice.
Edit: Someone already did it and they made a model of the ship. It looks good.

We gotta keep supporting channels like this and good old classic Star Trek

I assembled and painted my first Star Trek model recently. I could have gotten the Enterprise D, I could have gotten the Enterprise A Refit. But no... I WANTED the Reliant ( Miranda Class ).

Such an iconic ship from Wrath of Khan. :)

The Miranda is the C-130 (the Excelsior is the B-52) from Star Trek, it simply works, it is adaptable, flexible, robust; she does the job

The Lantree bring a type 6 transport probably means all the related classes are built on a transport hull.  This would explain the modularity and the ubiquity of these ships.  The Lantree does bear some resemblance to the TOS era transports that connected to cargo modules, with the ship itself having warp nacelles on the ventral side of the saucer.

The types 1-5 transport classes were probably a progression of increasingly modular designs with the Lantree/miranda family bringing so adaptable to various missions that the hull design was kept in service well over a century.
