you're so good at explaining things. I don't care if people think it's weird, in Korea and Japan, I always use formal polite speech with everyone unless we are close friends.

In 1988, when was 31, I moved to Tokyo with my wife and three little kids. And I spoke no Japanese. As you know, foreigners who study Japanese formally learn keigo. I think most of my Japanese friends thought I learned plain form first, like Japanese people. Making friends meant that our language would move from keigo to casual language. But I had no familiarity with casual Japanese, only keigo.

By the time I returned to the states 10 years later, I think I’d gotten a little better with casual speech. But more often than not, I think my Japanese with my friends was a strange mix of keigo and casual speech, maybe even in the same sentence!

Thank you so much for your videos! From 1998 until 2023, I spoke zero Japanese. Thanks to Japanese content creators like you, I've been trying to relearn the language. I'm going to Japan next month for the first time in 28 years; I hope these past three years of study will be enough! Thanks again!

Example of work and private life separation: My Japanese teacher is more or less my same age, during online lessons we both use です/ます but when I'm in Japan and we go drink we speak タメ口. It's been like this for years, I have never really pondered about it much, thought that's just how he likes to handle things. Before this video I never thought it's just a way to distinguish personal and work life.

Generally speaking though I feel like a lot of Japanese people just jump straight to タメ口 with me because I'm foreign and they therefore think I simply don't care much about the whole social hierarchy part. Even if they're substantially younger than me. Which is fair enough. I typically go straight to タメ口 with a lot of people just as fast in return. I think ever since starting to learn Japanese I had like two cases of "woops I think I'm making them uncomfortable by speaking too familiar" but I might also just be bad at reading the air and not getting the other cases. lol.

I had a situation with my colleague at work. I asked him, *"これも外す？"* ("Should I remove this too?"), and he got mad. He said, *"学校で敬語も勉強した？『です』と敬語を使って！"*

I was really disappointed at that moment because, before that, we had been talking to each other like colleagues who understood each other. I wasn't trying to offend him with the way I spoke. It was simply because my keigo isn't very good yet, and of course I know that's my fault.

But sometimes Japanese coworkers don't realize how difficult it is for foreigners, especially if they've never worked with foreigners before.

These videos are awesome. Even when I already know about the topic, Kaname gives an organised general perspective that helps me visualise everything in place and feel more at ease 😊.

As a speaker of Romanian, which has a bit more of a politeness system than most European languages but not as much as Japanese, it's interesting to see how differently the politeness is used. In Japanese it seems the hierarchy is much more strictly age/seniority-based, while in Europe it's more in-group vs out-group, how close you are to the one you're speaking to (and not who you're talking about ).

Your example of students is useful here, where the older student can speak casually even to a complete stranger as long as they're younger, and younger students are expected to speak politely to older students even if they know each other well. The way I'm used to it here , age only really becomes a factor once there's an entire generation of a gap, otherwise it's just how well you know each other. There's an entire level of politeness in Romanian that's mostly used to speak to like, elderly neighbours and such, where you don't want to treat them like strangers by being properly polite, but you still acknowledge they're elders by showing a little extra respect. This can also be used rudely to strangers to imply you know you should be speaking politely, but you don't give them the full respect.

Also kind of opposite, we'd speak casually to our own mother for example, but speak formally about her to someone we'd use polite speech with. Both systems are used to show politeness, but they do it in opposite ways :)
