You walk in the door and your dog does that big slow stretch right in front of you, looking up at you the whole time. I used to laugh and step right over them.

After about forty fosters coming through my front door, I pay a lot more attention now. The stretch is just one part of the homecoming. The window, the sniff-down, which way the tail wags, the shoe they bring you, the lean, the long soft look. Ten things, and one you should never ignore.

What's the very first thing your dog does when you get home?
