I worked 35 years in Ship Repair on the River Tyne. We did numerous lengthening jobs, but the highlight was when we cut a RORO Ship in half horizontally like a Cake and increased the height by a metre. This was at Middle Docks and Engineering Company. Most of those old timers who did the job are gone now but they were the best.

I was lucky enough to be on board the SA van der Stel, a Safmarine cargo ship in 1975 when she was lengthened by 33 meters in Kobe dock yard Japan. Something I will never forget. Four days from cut in half to refloat complete with the added section installed. Four months from cutting until sea trials. Wonderful experiance.

Makes a lot of sense. Most modern ships are made from module from new so cutting one at the original joint and adding another module should be just like building a new ship. Cutting and cleaning the joint looks like the hardest part.

We would do this to Tuna boats, cut and fit a prefabricated 5mtr section. It actually annoyed me slightly because the line on the keel of a lot of the boats we did had a nice curve, because of economics it was easier and more cost effective not to follow the line but to just make the insert straight. Even though when the boat was in the water one could not notice but on the slip it certainly look strange. We also fitted cones for the props to further increase efficiency.

My friend ran a ferry from John O Groats to Orkney. They had a new ferry built for them and, after the first season, sent it back to Glasgow to be lengthened. Passenger capacity increased from 200 to 250

There at 22:00 minutes, I'd bet the guys doing the cutting torch work are really feeling the stress on them...no matter what, this is a lot of skilled hand-work...!

I was involved in a few jobs like this but not quite to this scale. Its pretty cool to have everything cut to accept the middle section. Its a lot of work no doubt.

i was involved in many drydocking mostly for routine docking and occasionally a special project its very common that the ships staff are told to enter the dock with a minimum draft and the required trim , plus the least amount of fuel on board, 400 tonnes ROB is a ridiculous amount knowing what the work involved was with this vessel , no wonder the foreman was frustrated
