This video is a compilation of the best views of cherry blossoms and autumn leaves at Hikone Castle, located near the shore of Lake Biwa in the northeastern part of Shiga Prefecture!
■Hikone Castle
Hikone Castle, located near the shore of Lake Biwa in northeastern Shiga Prefecture, is one of only five “National Treasure Existing Keeps” in Japan. The entire site is designated as a national “Special Historic Site” and is one of the “100 Great Castles of Japan. Hikone Castle was the residence of the 14th generation of the Ii clan, the feudal lords of the Tokugawa shogunate.
In addition to the castle tower, Hikone Castle has other valuable remains such as the Tenbin Yagura and the Nishinomaru three-story turret, which are designated as National Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The view from the outer moat as well as the main castle is also outstanding. Hikone Castle is planted with approximately 1,300 cherry trees, and the rows of cherry trees along the moat and stonewalls are especially breathtaking.
■Hikone Castle and Genkyu-en Garden ( Late November to early December )
Genkyu-en is a former daimyo garden adjacent to the northeast side of Hikone Castle, a national treasure, and is designated as a "Special Historic Site" and "Place of Scenic Beauty" by the government. It is a beautiful Japanese garden built in the early Edo period (17th century), with the castle tower in the background, four islands and nine bridges across the central pond, and buildings such as Rinchikaku, Hosho-dai, and Hakkei-tei along the pond. You can enjoy the spectacular view of Genkyu-en while walking along the walkway.
■Matsubara Shimoyashiki ( Late November to early December )
The Matsubara Shimoyashiki (Ohama Goten) of the former Hikone Clan is located on the shore of Lake Biwa, north of Genkyu-en, and its buildings and garden have been designated a national "place of scenic beauty". It was built around 1810 by Naonaka Ii, the 11th lord of the Hikone Clan, and is a feudal lord's garden with a different location and atmosphere from Genkyu-en.
