I bought an S5 as it was a bargain secondhand with two lenses. It takes great photos. I’m now invested in lenses and not much into the video features. I’d love to see a rangefinder-style lumix full frame camera aimed at photographers, dumbing down on video features to keep costs down.

Got the S5ii I love it. It's all you need. Open Gate, 6K, 10bit, 422, V-Log (full fat) great auto focus, great stabilization. Great quality images in a decent file size and cheap media. And did I mention fantastic in low light. And I bought mine NEW for £900. And that is what makes this camera so good. You can have all the features you like but if it's out of your budget range it might as well be a million dollars.

Damn I bought the S5IIX in 2023 and it's a beast of a camera tbh even in today in 2025! I think the S5 line up is like the GH4 when it came out. You got a body capable of shooting 6K open gate kinda like 4K for GH4 back during its time was the best value for money! Honestly get yourself a couple of 2nd hand S5II or S5IIX and you'll be set up!

Still rocking the S5, bought on launch. Too embarrassed to say how many cameras I have bought since, looking for that, 'this will really make my photos great', camera purchase. Guess what, they don't really, the S5 is still killing it image quality wise.

4:51 incorrect S5IIX ‘can’ record ProRes internally to SD card but only up to FHD 50P 422HQ.

it's going to be hard to replace my 2 s5ii's....
I will get an S1ii to keep rigged out for clients, and then have an S1Rii for my photography and walk around.

If you mention HDMI RAW output you should mention that many Panasonic cameras can record in Blackmagic BRAW that way with a Video Assist 12G for example.

I hope Panasonic can compete and continue on, I like their product policies of good firmware update support (there will always be bugs in complex electronic products) and they don’t shaft their customers like Canon with their third-party lens limitations or Sony with the reduced features when the body detects a non-Sony lens.

Thanks for making this, though I feel like you glossed over the Resolutions on the S1RII a bit much. To me that is THE thing I'm craving (So close to buying a S1RII). Supposedly a firmware update is coming that will enabled 8K Open Gate, and as a dedicated Open Gate shooter I'm REALLY looking at that capability. That is THE deciding factor for me. Read out speed of the S1II would be nice, but I'll take a little jello (that non-nerds don't notice as much imo) for the ability to punch in a full 200% in a 4k video.

Thank you for the break-down... I own two S5ii and a GH5 (mostly for video projects) and have always been a Panasonic Fan for a long time now. Next stop - S1ii it is.... as the "Phase Detection AutoFocus" is to the next level in s1ii with higher fps support....unlike in s5ii, so for B-Rolls it'll definitely help to get a s1ii in the kitty :)
