Biography:
Bertrand Herz was deported at the age of 14 on Convoy 81, which departed on July 30, 1944, from the Toulouse-Matabiau train station bound for the Buchenwald and Ravensbrück concentration camps. He was deported with his parents, Willy and Louise, his sister Françoise, and her husband. Bertrand, his father, and his brother-in-law were sent to Buchenwald, while his mother and sister were transported to the Ravensbrück camp. His mother did not return from deportation. Bertrand and his family were assigned to the small Buchenwald camp and initially did not work. In December 1944, he and his father were transferred to the Niederorschel Kommando, where they worked twelve hours a day assembling airplane wings. His father died of exhaustion. The small camp at Buchenwald was evacuated on a death march to the main camp on April 1, 1945. Bertrand, suffering from dysentery, escaped death thanks to the intervention of his work detail's kapo, who stopped the march. The group arrived at Buchenwald on April 10, 1945. They were liberated by the camp resistance and American troops the following day. Bertrand arrived at the Hôtel Lutetia in Paris on April 29, 1945. He was reunited with Françoise, who had also survived, and his brother Jean-Claude, who had avoided deportation. Bertrand actively participated in the activities of the Buchenwald Dora and Kommandos Association.

Bertrand Herz died on May 20, 2021, in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.
