I grew up in Main beach, in the 80s, my old stomping ground. I remember when the groin at the bar was first built, we had to hump up along Seaworld and over the dunes up the beach to the rocky outcrop to go surfing, sometimes paddling over to sth Straddie or jumping the Seaworld fence for some free entertainment more times than I can count. Great suburb to grow up in, always heaps to do and never a dull moment.
Dad moved to Southport from Dalby as a Pastor in ‘67. Bob Fiebig dredged around Miami & ‘made’ the Queen Bee caravan park there. Remember the picture theatre in the Broadwater at the jetty end & went there a few times. Sunland shopping centre was new & Isle of Capri was opening up & Mermaid waters too. Paradise towers at Surfers was the tallest building when we left in ‘71. Thanks for the informative vid.
I love this video. Are you able to do something similar for Burleigh Waters? I'm trying to work out the story of water there, especially around Lake Burleigh and the Burleigh Knoll park. I understand Dunlops drain fed Lake Burleigh since it was created by farmers in the 1800s - and still does - but it's hard to find images and stories of the water there, before all all the terraforming, and even during those changes.
We moved from Sydney on Boxing Day 1969. I was six. Dad built “Barwick’s Hire” on Main Beach Pde. Being a local businessman and fishing enthusiast, he was made an honorary ranger of the spit by the GGCC. We moved out to Paradise Point after the 1974 floods. When dad died in 1995 we placed his ashes in the seaway. When mum died during COVID we placed her ashes there too, so she could be with dad. The GC certainly was our home. Nice video. Best wishes.
Another great doco rob . The same forces that were destroying the Southport end have steadily devoured the southern end of north Stradbroke and swanbay and countless islands are gone as jumpinpin has become a scary monster of a bar,i hear they catch squire at carbrook now, insane water movement through a once slow moving Delta of the logan is changing the area every minute
Grew up here & still here I remember the spit as a teen we’d get in a 4 wheel drive tow tyres we’d sit on the along the water the old bar as they used to call it & it had really amazing little bays everywhere not like now all developed it wouldn’t surprise me when they stat building high rises up there & it’ll happen & it’ll be sad as Gold Coast has hardly any history left, when I lived at Nobbys beach we had a whiskey bar called The Columbus Wallace was kool but yea it’s gone now too didn’t last long I also worked at Southport surf club for years after working at fishos (fisherman’s Whatf) that was originally where the tapped out Versace is now, we were at marineland and & sea world as kids amazing the transformation the spit has undergone over the decades & even now after cyclone Alfred it’s still recovering but still great to go for a swim with your dog
If you want to see some rather large evil looking black snakes walk the sandy tracks south from the seaway. They are as scared of you as you are of them, so not really a problem. Occasionally, after heavy seas remove the width of the beaches , sand gets trucked from the seaway down to Surfers Beach.
