Since the 1860s, people have claimed to have seen some sort of sea monster in Lake Michigan. As you may expect, hilarity often ensued. But what were people actually seeing? Because they definitely saw something. Come learn with me!

"a sturgeon like creature" then proceeds to keep describing a large sturgeon... hmmm maybe there's a few particularly large sturgeon?

The Great Lakes are scary enough without monsters! Superior has dined on many ships.

"People hitherto regarded as sane" is a hilariously backhanded way to implicitly discredit a source.

No, but we do have an invasive lamprey problem. So I guess it's like a bunch of tiny sea serpents

any city by lake ever: "oh no there is a horrible monster here! beware!"
Every person ever "well NOW I'll definitely have to go there!"

Title: sea serpent
Me: oh, that’s an oarfish

Me: oh, nevermind, go on

the lakes don't even need a monster dude, michigan and superior are so vast that they both have their own shipwreck tours.

Appropriate reaction to Canadian geese.

6:29 Sturgeon don't actully have scales. You're likely thinking of Scutes, the bone-like plats that protrude from their back.

So I was moving last week and had a Uhaul and the picture was "Champi" the legendary Lake Champaign monster and I was so excited that I had a Cryptid themed van for my move

I love legends with a grain of truth, finding elephant skulls on the supposed island of the cyclops, giant oarfish= sea serpents. I recently read about a dragon that supposedly got trapped in a mire- years later they found the body of an ichthyosaur there

A bull shark was caught in the Mississippi River near St. Louis in 1995. Experts believe it swam all the way up from the Gulf of Mexico. Apparently they can adapt to fresh water, so I suppose a bull shark could survive in the lake. How it would get there would be a different story.

Bull sharks can survive extended periods in fresh water. They have been seen as far up the Mississippi as Alton, IL.
You're cat is named Mila? My 13 year old Mila - named for Mila Kunis - passed away Sunday night. I hope you have as many years with your sweet fur baby as I did with mine.

I can tell you as a Wisconsin native that there is a lake monster in local folklore for just about any sizable body of water in the state (which is a ton). The ones I can think of top my head I grew up hearing about were the devils lake monster, bozho (he’s friendly and likes to tickle beachgoers and play pranks on sailors) of lake mendota, pressie of Lake Superior and of course the serpent of Lake Michigan which me and my childhood friend were convinced we saw on a trip to the beach when we were kids.

I think it entirely plausible that some of these "sea monster" sightings are sturgeon, because they live for a century or more and can grow to 10 meters in length. When I lived in Mattawa, my spouse would sit on the dock singing and playing his guitar, and this pewter grey fish with spines down its back would come to the surface like something out of the Kalevala.

Yes, the Mishipeshu and the Misignebig,. We also have the Lake Michigan Triangle, a number of haunted lighthouses, and ghost ships. And that's not even touching the other four lakes.
