Thank you for watching!
The Dramatics gave us some of the smoothest harmonies in soul music history with classics like “In the Rain” and “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get.” But behind those unforgettable records was a far more complicated story filled with lineup changes, rival groups, unexpected departures, tragedy, reinvention, and decades of fighting to preserve the group’s legacy.
From Ron Banks and L.J. Reynolds to Larry “Squirrel” Demps, Larry Reed, Willie Ford, William “Wee Gee” Howard, Elbert “Vamp” Wilkins, Roderick Davis, Lenny Mayes, Winzell Kelly, Michael Brock, and Barrington “Bo” Henderson, this video looks back at the men who helped shape different eras of The Dramatics.
Some remained with the group for decades. Others walked away just as fame arrived. A few built completely different lives as teachers, gospel singers, producers, or members of other legendary R&B groups. And several were taken far too young.
The story of The Dramatics was never simply about one lineup. At different points, competing groups even performed under the same name, creating disputes that lasted for years. Yet through all of those changes, songs like “In the Rain” continued introducing new generations to the voices that made Detroit soul unforgettable.
