7 Places That Could Vanish And the People Who Refuse to Leave

They Stayed

They Stayed

22 million people live in Mexico City, built on a drained lake that's still swallowing it. A monument built with nine steps now has more than twenty — a nearby palace has sunk nearly four meters since 1904. This is one of seven places on Earth where the ground itself is moving: some sink, some slide, some disappear underwater completely.

From Nepal's terraced mountain slopes to Hong Kong's hillside towers, from Freetown's eroding hills to Bangladesh's vanishing river islands, from New Orleans sitting below sea level to Venice fighting the tide with a multi-billion-euro flood barrier — these are the places where the ground won't hold still, and millions of people stay anyway.

This is the story of why they stay.
