after being a mixing engineer for over 25 years, I learned that I can just mix anything with dbx 160, SSL Bus compressor and a basic stock compressor

Over 2 decades + I have used R compressor. It is probably my most used compressor. Probably never been a point it hasn't been my most used.

I do use Kotelnikov on my bus often and an SSL of some sort if my drums are poking and need rounding off a bit with a slow attack more as a top end tonal darkening to reign things in. Comprexxor I use but not as a compressor, just the saturation button now and then.

I honestly think if it wasn't for me enjoying tinkering on pointlessly with different things, I would be happy using R comp on pretty much everything. I use it to transient boost, I use it for levelling, I use it for expansion, I use it to side chain snares to snares to pull snares out of breaks when a drum machine snare hits. I use it for nearly everything and when I don't, I usually think I could have popped Rcomp on that and got where I wanted to be faster.

So really could have done almost everything over the years on a £20 VST but hey where's the fun in not shitting your money up the wall on stuff you don't need.

For anyone who has tried the Manley Variable Mu plugin and wondered what the fuss is all about, you should try the hardware. The plugin can be useful, but it sounds nothing like the original unit. When used correctly, the hardware adds depth, stereo spread, and sparkling fullness to anything that passes through it. It's painfully expensive, but so worth saving up for. I use it for tracking, mixing, and mastering. It excels in all those roles. For mastering I have it paired with the Neve Master Bus Transformer and the Manley Massive Passive. It's a magical combination. I know this video is about plugins, but if you aspire to own hardware, I suggest putting the Variable Mu high on your list.

You could really use separate lists for volume leveling, transients, sustain (when used as guitar effect, for example), glue, dynamics, and any I may have forgotten. If one tool places well in multiple categories, that can make it more valuable.... but comparing tools across multiple uses doesn't seem fair. I seriously like how you said this is YOUR list, not THE list. Different tastes and needs. I also like how you give your reasons for your choices since they may not apply to everyone. I enjoyed it and learned some things, thank you!

I'm hoping to run through my (too) extensive collection and identify the best 2 or 3 plugins for each use, then quit wasting my time updating and learning all the others. And when considering a new purchase.... well, I better think it's going to knock out something else or why am I looking at it? The channel strips pose a unique problem in that their components will likely be at different levels. I'm still trying to understand why channel strips are better than using separate plugins to compress, expand, filter, EQ. Or are they? And it may be good to hand on to some of the free or inexpensive runner-up plugins that could hold new value when the "better" more expensive counterpart needs a costly upgrade.
