ABOUT THE ARTIST & THE SARANGI
Ustad Sabri Khan (Padma Bhushan & Padma Shri recipient) was internationally revered for elevating the Sarangi from an accompaniment instrument into a prominent solo vehicle across world stages, including Carnegie Hall, the BBC, and the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris.
The Sarangi is carved from a single block of seasoned tun or rosewood, hollowed and covered with goatskin parchment. It features 3 main gut strings, 1 brass drone string, and up to 35 sympathetic steel resonance strings (Tarab). Unlike western bowed strings, it is played not with the fingertips, but by stopping the strings sideways using the cuticles and fingernails, enabling its characteristic glides (Meend) and human-like inflections.
