In Hanoi, Vietnam, we explore the historic Old Quarter and French Quarter while discovering Vietnamese food that tastes very different from what we knew back home. From Michelin Guide-listed Vietnamese cuisine and classic Hanoi pho to water puppetry and colonial architecture, this is a walk through the history, food, and everyday atmosphere of Vietnam’s capital.

Leaving the busy streets of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, we head into the French Quarter, where colonial-era architecture remains part of the modern cityscape. The mix of European and Asian influences gives this part of Hanoi a character of its own.

Food is a major part of this journey. At Michelin Guide-listed Luk Lak, we try modern Vietnamese dishes including a salad made with Thanh Hà lychees and pork belly cooked with bamboo and banana leaves. Later, we visit the famous Phở 10 Lý Quốc Sư for pho and Mezze for dishes representing the flavors of northern, central, and southern Vietnam. We also discover just how different bánh xèo can be from one restaurant to another.

Along the way, we walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, visit the Vietnam National Museum of History and St. Joseph’s Cathedral, and watch a traditional Vietnamese water puppet performance—a form of entertainment with roots going back to the 11th century.

From Hanoi’s architecture and historic streets to its restaurants and lively nightlife, this video follows the city at street level before we continue our journey to New Delhi, India.
