It became really serious when she performed in Atlanta halfway through the tour, declared that they were the winners so far, and rewarded them by singing the big 3 (Thique, All up in your mind and Drunk in Love). From that moment on, the beyhive was not playingggg about the mute challenge, they were campaigning in the lines and in their sections with signs to get everybody on board to be the new winners. You would get updates on tiktok at every stop, ranking the cities and everything. It was a whole thing and some people would make noise on purpose (like Ryan lmao) and it would literally start fights at the concerts or these people would get dragged online, good times haha.
I remember going to the Toronto show in July and not knowing about it (and horribly failing lmao), but by the time I went to the Vancouver show in September, it was really serious since everybody wanted her to perform the big 3 again for their city.
Yes it was slightly edited for the movie, but it really would get this quiet. It's more that people would get so excited by the silence that they would start cheering too early, therefore ruining the challenge.
If I remember correctly, the final winners were New Orleans even though she said Kansas City was the winner, but I swear she only said it because it was the last show and she had to get that shot for the movie because yall were literally so loud lmao
