Improve your violin intonation and left-hand frame through thirds with Dounis Daily Dozen Exercise #4.

In the fourth installment of my Dounis Daily Dozen, I explore Dounis’s exercise in thirds, one of the most useful ways to develop reliable intonation, a balanced left-hand frame, and one that will certainly create a feeling in the hand that one has after many hours of practice (Dounis's goal).

I’ve been practicing Dounis exercises for over 20 years, and in this series I’m sharing the approaches and modifications I’ve developed through my own playing and teaching. As always, I’m interested not simply in getting through the exercise, but in finding the most efficient and coordinated way of practicing it.

In this lesson, we look closely at practicing thirds, maintaining an organized left-hand frame, listening carefully for intonation, and developing greater freedom and security across the fingerboard.

Dounis Daily Dozen is an ongoing series exploring D.C. Dounis’s classic violin exercises through the lens of modern violin pedagogy, healthy movement, and more than two decades of my own experience practicing and teaching them.

Subscribe for future installments of the Daily Dozen and more violin technique, performance, and pedagogy.
