I bought a Ring of Psychic Resistance once for 4000gp, and I regretted the purchase... right up until I got hit with 2 Mind Blasts in a row waaaay later in the game. I had a similar reaction, except I had a physical prop ring to flail around at everyone who ever questioned my purchase.

I bet you Matt gave the BBEG fireball explicitly for Fjord. That there is some good DMing. It seems basic, but too many of my DMs don't do stuff like that.
