Our guest is Hali Mo, who went viral in Japan after a Business Insider Japan piece. When we floated the idea of this conversation on X, a lot of you responded. Thank you.

Economics and computer science at Stanford, then business analyst at McKinsey, then product manager at a startup in Silicon Valley.
An elite career all the way — and at 29 she quit, and opened a bakery.
Today she runs a micro-bakery in San Francisco on her own. Her Instagram is closing in on 100,000 followers.

Three things we talked about.

Why a move that looks strange from the outside — elite career to bakery — can be the rational one. Change what you expect of yourself and what counts as rational changes with it.

At what point inside an elite career you actually notice you are unhappy. The Sunday-night dread exists in America too.

What it takes to replace someone else's definition of "the best" with your own. As long as "everyone else is applying" is the reason, you will not find work that fits.

For anyone tired of chasing a clean résumé and looking for work that is actually theirs.
Thanks for making it through another week.
