She earned three Best Actress Oscar nominations, then walked away from Hollywood at the height of her fame. Here's what really happened to Debra Winger.

Winger broke out in Urban Cowboy (1980), then delivered career-defining performances in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) and Terms of Endearment (1983), both earning her Academy Award nominations. A third nomination followed for Shadowlands (1993). But by her late 30s, Winger grew disillusioned with the roles being offered to her and deliberately stepped back from the spotlight to focus on raising her two sons with husband Arliss Howard.

She didn't disappear entirely — she wrote the memoir Undiscovered, taught at Harvard, and made a celebrated return with Rachel Getting Married (2008), later appearing in The Ranch (2016–2020), Mr. Corman, and Accused. She's currently back on stage, starring opposite Howard in The Gin Game. This video looks back at the career of one of the most fiercely independent actresses of her generation.
