This is the first segment on the gargoyle paper mache tutorial. In this video, we begin with drawing our templates on newspaper for the head, body, wings , and platform. We take those templates and trace them on corrugated cardboard and then we begin making them three dimensional .
Tools & Materials: newspaper, corrugated cardboard, a marker, a ruler , a blade and scissors, masking tape, Styrofoam, hot glue gun and hot glue sticks. paper mache paste.

Anyway, some thoughts...
1. Pizza boxes for the base. If its not the right dimension, you can unfold the box and use it as a template with the right dimensions on clean cardboard.
2. Regarding the wings... The corrugated cardboard has a "grain". it folds nicely along the corrugations and not so nicely across it. One wing the corrugations was horizontal (the one you demonstrated curving with the pipe) and the other was vertical. The vertical one had a better, smoother curvature. I think if you had drawn/cut the template with the corrugations on a diagonal (opposite diagonal for the second wing) it would fold/curve much easier. But that would require a big supply of cardboard to plan that out.
3. The construction of the head reminds me of making a muppet. Lots of head shape patterns to choose from for that. As you said, no need to get too accurate. You can build on top of the skull shape later. While foam does stretch and compress better than 'thin' cardboard to smooth out the shape, if you put more darts into the cardboard, it will curve and smooth out a bit better.
4. On the frame, instead of cutting the piece in half and gluing at an angle, you could make it a couple inches wider, cut two slots half the length at the point you widened it out and fold at the centerline.
Then cut slots in the other piece so that they slide together. I cant remember the name for the slotting technique, but most often see it in wine bottle separators in cases of wine.
