Did Donald Trump propose to Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz that he betray Donald Tusk and form a coalition with the Law and Justice Party (PiS)? It sounds absurd, but several questions arise surrounding the two politicians' meeting in March 2026.

It all began with the canceled visit of Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, who was scheduled to meet with Pete Hegseth on September 23rd to discuss the details of establishing a permanent US military base in Poland. The meeting was postponed, quickly sparking speculation that it might have been politically motivated. A rumor circulated that Adam Bielan was seeking to delay the decision on the base until a change of government, so that Donald Tusk could not politically exploit its creation before the 2027 elections. Bielan denied this, claiming that not only had he not canceled anything but had actually helped Kosiniak-Kamysz organize another, more important meeting.

The conversation in question concerned a conversation that took place in March, during Kosiniak-Kamysz's visit to Washington. The Deputy Prime Minister then met with Donald Trump, although he initially did not publicly disclose the fact. Six months later, Kosiniak-Kamysz described the conversation as brief and courteous, and Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed its existence, emphasizing that it was confidential and concerned the internal situation in Poland rather than military bases. He then said that "neither enemy nor ally" would decide who governs Poland. These words were interpreted as a hint of confirmation of a rumor that Trump may have suggested to Kosiniak-Kamysz a change of coalition and cooperation with the right wing. Bielan and Nikodem Rachoń, among others, publicly deny this.

According to a source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conversation concerned Polish politics, and Kosiniak-Kamysz was primarily explaining to Trump that in Poland, politics is conducted by the government, not the president. The same person, however, doesn't rule out the possibility that Trump might have floated the idea of a government change, especially since the US president sometimes makes surprising and awkward comments during meetings with foreign leaders.

The whole commotion is gaining significance in light of the upcoming decision regarding a permanent US military base in Poland. The review of US troops in Europe, upon which the announcement of the decision was contingent, is drawing to a close. The government expects more specific details to emerge during the meeting of NATO leaders, which will take place in Poland in November.
