Why It Sucks To Be Born As A Fire Ant Queen

Ant Lore

Why It Sucks To Be Born As A Fire Ant Queen reveals the hidden life of one of nature’s most intense colony builders. Most people imagine a queen ant as the ruler of the nest, but the real fire ant queen life cycle is a constant test of timing, chemistry, survival, and sacrifice.

From the nuptial flight to claustral founding, from tiny nanitic workers to the rise of a massive fire ant colony, this insect documentary follows how a queen ant becomes the center of an underground society while never truly being in control. Every stage is shaped by ant behavior, pheromones, colony genetics, parasites, predators, and the strict rules of social insects.

If you enjoy ant colony documentaries, animal facts, insect biology, evolutionary biology, nature documentaries, and cinematic science storytelling, this episode breaks down the real biology behind Solenopsis invicta and why being born as a fire ant queen is one of the hardest roles in the insect world.

Watch until the end to see how the colony that depends on her can eventually turn against her.

Two things people always ask on these, so here first.

This is the red imported fire ant specifically. Not every species does this, plenty of queens found alone and never share a chamber. Fire ants do it because the ground is crowded, and a group nest starts with roughly three times the workforce of a solitary one.

And no, she can't leave. The wings are gone within 24 hours of mating and the flight muscle is broken down and fed into the eggs. There was never a version of this where she flies out.

Every number in this is sourced in the description. Next one on this channel is what happens when two of these young colonies find each other.

I once had to count all the fire ants in a colony (entomology lab) and by the end their danger pheromones were making me nasueus and giving me a headache. It smelled like a dense citrus smell

And this is why ants and other insects don't have feelings nor self-awareness, they run on a preset Instinct whirring, perfected by evolution.

The fact that we know this unfortunately means several human beings have had the horrible misfortune of having to witness this.

On the video game Grounded, traveling through the ant tunnels is so scary and claustrophobic

…after long, hard consideration, I’m starting to think my kids aren’t that bad.

The one thing missing is where the next set of queen ants come from. We see the origin story of the male drone ants, but when does a new queen ant come into existance? Or was it something that was going on all along?

@atanas1817 4 months ago

It is possible for a colony to adopt a newly fertilized queen after the original is dead or even while she is still alive. There are some requirements that have to be met but it does happen

HOOKED me in the first five seconds.

The Zerg would easily be overrun.

What would be interesting research is to investigate the brains of ants / ant queens. Do they feel the anxiety of the colony turning? This would be very amazing to investigate. Or is it purely mechanical way of life, like "ok, im dying now, no issues here."
