Obsession is an insane horror movie. Honestly my pick for Horror Movie of the Year. It was genuinely terrifying. Bear uses a One Wish Willow, to make his crush Nikki Freeman, fall in love with him. But she becomes an obsessed, possessive entity that terrorizes him the entire movie. I was actually scared while watching and even editing this movie.

Bro got his girlfriend into a curse which forced her to love him and STILL fumbled the bag

You know the funny thing is this whole thing could have been avoided if he just told her how he felt about her the normal way the traditional way rather than wishing for it.

Somehow, Nikki was the most normal person in this movie, aside from sara

After watching the movie, talking about it with friends, and rewatching certain clips online, I have been trying to figure out the exact moment when I go, “Bear knows what he’s doing is wrong, and he is evil.”
For me, I think it’s the dinner scene, when Ian calls him and tells him her father is perfectly healthy. We even get a flashback to him in the car, where he snaps the One Wish Willow, and he is piecing it together as Ian says on the phone, “It’s like Nikki snapped into a different person, and she’s all of a sudden infatuated with you.” That’s the moment when I believe he knew his wish had come true. Then, her acting strange right after, with the famous “no no no no” line, only confirmed it for him.
So, for me, all the following scenes involve him knowingly doing things with her while her autonomy has been taken away, and he is aware of it. Funnily enough, the very next scene after the dinner is the sex, or grape, scene. If some people still dispute this, the moment in the film where it is absolutely confirmed that he knows his wish came true is when he is on the phone with the Tabi Cat company and asks whether his wish can be altered. This is undeniable. The point is, the evidence shows that he most likely knew about it beforehand, and I place that moment at the dinner, when he gets the news from Ian.
Before that, I don’t think he knew or did anything wrong, except being scared to tell her that he liked her and calling her Freaky Nikki. By “wrong,” I mean anything seriously, legitimately, or morally wrong. The reason I think this is the following:
He took her to his home at her request, despite insisting that she should just go home and sleep at her own place. At some point, when she starts acting weirdly outside his car, he does glance back at the One Wish Willow, but I think it’s more of a “well, that seems weirdly coincidental with what I just wished for” sort of glance. It’s not actual proof, but simply a seemingly funny coincidence.
After they get to his place, he lets her take the bed and sleeps next to her only when she insists. She lies on his head and then proceeds to kiss him. She then starts acting super strange and crying, so he sleeps on the floor and wakes up to her making a memorial for the cat, with the actual body on the floor. I’m sure he thought it was strange and fucked up, but remember, like any of us would in real life, he thought the One Wish Willow was just some toy. He probably rationally didn’t see any connection between that wish and her deciding to take out the fucking cat and lay it on the ground.
After that, he and Ian come to the conclusion that she is on Molly, and although she gives him some weird stares, he also concludes, along with Ian, that it is just because she is staring at both of them while thinking they are talking about her. After that, Nikki appears at his house and “confesses” to him about being on Molly. She is just lying, of course, but this was “Wish Nikki’s” way of convincing Bear that those weird jump scares were caused by drugs, and not by the real Nikki momentarily waking up to the situation.
Then she says she does like him back, and we get a montage of them just doing normal relationship things, with her acting genuinely normal and seemingly like Nikki. The one slightly off thing is her just staring at him, and him casually turning her face toward the TV. It shows that he is used to such infatuation from her, but it isn’t anything particularly out of the ordinary.
And then the next scene is the dinner scene. That’s where I think he finally realizes. We, as the audience, know it’s a horror film, so we know it is almost definitely true as soon as he snaps it. But we, as movie fans, are expecting supernatural things to happen in a horror film. So I think any normal, rational person would start clocking it at that dinner scene.
None of this takes anything away from the fact that the conclusion of the movie is that Bear was being a complete POS who was selfish, cowardly, despicable, and a grapist. He tried to fix her and continuously showed that he knew what was going on, but he didn’t try to stop it until it was already too late and he was just trying to avoid any consequences.
But yeah, that’s my opinion. Let me know if you agree or disagree.
