There is a far simpler method. The triangles are symmetric right triangles - so the hypotenuse is the square root of two times the side. The sides are x and (10-x), so to get the area of the rectangle just multiply them. (√2 * x) * (√2 * (10-x)) = 20. That quickly reduces to x^2 -10x+10=0.

I would have loved this fun and friendly approach when I was at school. It makes maths extra fun with all these neat puzzles from other peoples obstacle courses.

If I'd had a maths teacher like you at school, I'd have surely got higher grades from listening intently to your voice, although I might have been distracted by spending too much time looking at you instead of the chalkboard 😊

I love your manner and your visuals - you are so clear and patient. Every middle, high school,
and college student should be using your channel to support their classroom studies. I took
math only thru trigonometry, and can usually follow you in all algebra, geometry, and trig problems.
The other math podcasters move along and talk too fast, so continue to teach exactly

I tried the Pythagorean theorem getting square root 2 times x as the hypotenuse of the small triangle and the square root of 2 times (10-x) for the hypotenuse of the big triangle. I multiplied them together and set it to 20. Eventually I got the same x^2-10x+10. I can't say how long it took my 50 year old brain to get there but I need a nap now. Thanks for such awesome videos!

All of this is simple logically, and then you get a quadratic equation that you don't understand, and you just have to run with it. Excellent breakdown Excellent teaching. The x as a multiplication and a value written beside each other can be a little off-putting. Great work at showing how all things can be simplified and understood

I love watching these. I couldn't solve them to save my life, though. I wish I could go back in time and pay more attention to this stuff when I was in school and learn how to solve this, but I feel like I may be too old at this point. Not that I would do anything with it, but I think critical thinking is more important than ever.

Cheeky question and misleading diagram, I love it. I got 1.127, which is 5 - the root of 15, but of course wasn't thinking of the inverse based on the assumption of the diagram, which of course the inscribed rectangle isn't constrained at all. Math beat my geometry. Very nice, I had fun with this.
