Can a simple roll of black plastic pipe effectively heat your water for free?

In this practical DIY physics experiment, I placed 100 meters of coiled black irrigation pipe directly on my sunny terrace to build a homemade solar thermal collector. I wanted to see exactly how much heat this incredibly cheap setup could generate on an average sunny day.

We will measure the exact incoming and outgoing water temperatures, calculate the flow rate, and do the thermodynamic math to find out the true heating capability. Spoiler alert: the water came out burning hot, and the calculated thermal output was equivalent to a massive 1500-Watt electric heater!

This is a fantastic, low-cost way to heat a backyard swimming pool or pre-heat your domestic hot water using nothing but the power of the sun.
