This is a very different video. I've had both LEGO trains and model trains almost my whole life, and I love both. I've never seen anyone really compare the two, so here's a video essay talking about the pros and cons of both systems and hopefully it'll help you decide which is better.

Either way: You'll never financially recover from them.

I think lego would be good if there was more and less expensive

6:27 umm, the same applies to model trains aswell. It just they get more complicated when you make it more complex.

As much as I like realism and scenery, I choose Lego. You can build almost anything with bricks.

Lego, but I like both

Lowkey underrated video, hope it gets some traction!

Either one is good

Good to hear your take on the differences between the two hobbies. One thing you didn’t mention is *space*. I like the flexibility of Lego (I’m very indecisive!), but I don’t have the space to run Lego trains – they’re just far too big. If I had the skill and patience for traditional railway modelling, I’d probably choose N gauge, which is much, much smaller.

Will you be at Greenbergs in November mister SteveTheWeave???

I love how they put Bachman on the cover when Bachman is seen as toy trains by most prototypical modelers.

I love both, building lego trains and playing with thomas ho scale and lionel o gauge trains. but what do you think about train simulator games versus model trains and real trains in general?
awesome video.

MOC’s and 3rd party bricks are the way to go to keep costs down with Lego trains. Letbricks and Aliexpress ftw.

I have a large 8 wide Lego garden layout that I built with my kids. I chose Lego because I can have my more serious 8 wide locomotives and rolling stock, and my son and daughter have theirs in 6wide. We have from 80+ cars being pulled by my ES44AC’s with a blunami chip and custom batteries, to my kids’ Thomas and Friends loco’s pulling 2-3 cars each on their “Island of Sodor.” Best part is that if we drop one or a component burns out, they are easily rebuildable or replaceable. Lego is the way to go for creativity, flexibility and reliability.

Lego trains layouts sets ❤❤❤

14:12 apples and oranges. The Thomas license needs to be considered in that price. You can get far more locomotive for far less cost. Also, how much do all the motors and battery pack, and mods to make it run properly around the track cost? The most fair comparison would be starter sets. You get roughly the same set up for around the same price.

N scale trains fits in small space than other model train gauge & lego trains

lego isn't only what the danish company puts out anymore - the patents have all run out, and the market is vast nowadays. bluebrixx, lumibricks, pantasy, etc. and rebrickable mocs made with bricks from snap, gobricks etc. gives you an unlimited supply to build every region and area as you like. i am working on a late 19th century/wild west railroad world, and it's so much fun :-) most of my bricks do not have the brand name on their studs - and why should they ?

@MaisYeahTrainsOfficial 1 month ago

I don’t know about you, but I build the base at 10 studs wide on default

What about wooden railway like brio,TWR,bigjigs, whittle shortline, etc. Ability to change track, bigger layout in small room, realistic trains, don't need a controller and ,more benefits
