Some of history’s greatest thinkers experimented with substances that altered perception, boosted energy, or changed the way they understood the mind itself. From Sigmund Freud’s fascination with cocaine to psychologist William James experimenting with nitrous oxide, drugs sometimes occupied a surprising place in the intellectual history of science, philosophy, literature, and creativity.
In this video, we explore how famous intellectuals encountered stimulants, anesthetics, intoxicants, and other mind-altering substances and what those experiences actually meant for their lives and work. We’ll separate documented history from exaggerated legends while examining an era when many substances now tightly regulated were new, medically accepted, or poorly understood. Freud, for example, began studying cocaine’s potential medical uses in 1884, while James later described experiences with nitrous oxide that influenced aspects of his philosophical thinking.
