We’re deep diving into the rise of the fake rich influencer. Designer hauls, luxury lifestyles, financed cars, fake handbags, credit card debt and the social media pressure to look wealthy even when your finances are an absolute shambles. Because what could be more important than appearing rich to people who don't even know you, right? These days, seeing an influencer dripping in Chanel, Cartier and Hermès, driving a luxury car and holidaying in expensive hotels tells you almost nothing about their actual bank balance. The bag could be fake, the car could be financed, the clothes could be returned after the haul and the entire lifestyle could be funded by debt, credit cards, sponsorships or borrowed props. Meanwhile, normal women are sitting at home working, budgeting, saving money, paying bills and trying to build actual wealth, wondering why everyone else on Instagram and TikTok seems so much richer than them. And that’s the really messed-up part: some of the influencers making you feel broke might genuinely have less money than you do.
We’re talking fake wealth, influencer finances, debt, luxury culture, keeping up with the Joneses, designer obsession, social media comparison and why looking rich and actually being rich are two very different things.
Because real financial security isn’t particularly sexy online. Savings, investments, assets, paying your bills and staying out of consumer debt don’t exactly make for an exciting unboxing video.
Welcome to the golden age of the fake rich.
