Moscow, October 16, 1941. At the top of the execution list in Kommunarka, near Moscow, is Sergei Efron—the man who thirty years ago handed a carnelian to a girl named Marina Tsvetaeva on the beach in Koktebel.
A son of the Narodnaya Volya (People's Will). A volunteer of the Ice March. An émigré. A Soviet intelligence agent whose name surfaced in the murder of Ignatius Reiss. A prisoner of the Lubyanka who never gave a single name during interrogation.
How did a White Army officer become an NKVD agent? Why did Marina Tsvetaeva follow him to the USSR, writing on an old letter, "So I'll go. Like a dog"? And who is he—a traitor who destroyed his family, or a victim of those he trusted?
