The cemetery is part of a long tradition of worship in Balquhidder Glen, with evidence of sacred use going back many centuries — possibly to early Christian times when St Angus established an oratory in the area.
The old church (the ruin you see today) was built in 1631 by David Murray, Lord Scone, replacing an even earlier medieval church on the site.

The kirkyard surrounds the old church ruins and contains gravestones and memorials dating back to at least the 17th century.
It has long served as the burial ground for local families and clan chiefs, especially Clan MacLaren, whose chiefs are traditionally interred there.

Its most famous burial is Rob Roy MacGregor (1671–1734), the legendary Scottish outlaw and folk hero. His grave — marked with the motto “MacGregor Despite Them” — draws visitors from around the world.
He lies alongside his wife and two of his sons, with some gravestones believed to be older stones reused for their markers.

In 1855, a new parish church was built nearby, and the old kirkyard continued as the historic cemetery.
Today the site is valued for its historic atmosphere, clan heritage, and connection to Highland culture.
